CARRY, The Coalition for At-Risk Restoring Youth, is a non-profit organization dedicated to making a difference in the lives of foster care and at-risk youth by providing programs that enhance self-esteem, selfworth, self-sufficiency and long-term success.
Founded in 2006, Carry’s initial efforts were in Dr. Grimes’ field: pro bono dermatology to the clients of other non-profits serving foster care, at-risk and homeless youth. Despite available healthcare for at-risk youth via the Department of Children & Family Services, many children with skin disorders were not treated.
Quality of life measurements show that chronic skin disorders adversely compromise the well-being of youth. Although not life-threatening, these disorders are visible to others and in turn make children more susceptible to social problems, lack of self-confidence, embarrassment and poor self-esteem.
Moreover, it became apparent that these youngsters required numerous resources for success, for they were dealing with a history of adverse childhood experiences. Many were old before their time, fending for themselves on the streets of Los Angeles.
